Jets place Colon on IR, activate Milliner from short-term IR
The Jets had a few surprising injury news Wednesday afternoon when they placed veteran guard Willie Colon on season-ending injured reserve.
Colon spoke last week about how rest is the best thing for his knees, so it wasn’t a surprise when he was inactive Sunday with the Jets facing two games in five days.
The Jets’ final injury report of the week before Thursday night’s game against Buffalo fell about as expected from the week’s practice developments. He had injured his wrist during the second week of training since and was placed on short-term IR at the start of the regular season.
The Jets could use Milliner right about now, too: Starting cornerback Antonio Cromartie is doubtful for the Bills game with a left thigh bruise that threatens to keep him from playing for the first time in his 10-year career. Brian Winters will replace him as the starting right guard. Though Winters had a good game earlier this season in a start against the Dolphins, he has played poorly for the majority of his National Football League career.
Colon, who plays with a nasty edge, returned for a third season with the Jets this year on a one-year, minimum salary benefit contract.
Buster Skrine, the Jets’ No. 3 cornerback, is listed as questionable – 50-50 to play – with a shoulder injury.
Bowles acknowledged Tuesday that with Marcus Gilchrist and Rontez Miles the only healthy safeties on the roster, he could move a few of the cornerbacks into that role in spot duty.
Milliner, their 2013 first-rounder, has yet to make any kind of impact for the Jets, but he’ll have his chance now. Two NY safeties – Calvin Pryor and Dion Bailey – won’t play against Buffalo because of injuries. RB Bilal Powell, also dealing with an ankle injury, was limited at practice and was doubtful for the game.
