Details are emerging about police killing of Louisiana 6-year-old, and they
Two United States law enforcement officers have been arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder over the fatal shooting of a six-year-old boy in Louisiana, officials said.
Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. are Louisiana police officers who are now incarcerated in a Louisiana prison for the murder of Jeremy Mardis. But Louisiana’s head of state police, Col. Mike Edmonson, has said there was no evidence a warrant was issued. He declined to describe the video, but said last Friday that “it’s the most disturbing thing I’ve seen – and I will leave it at that”. Their bail amount was relayed to the media by Jeansonne outside the closed hearing in the Lousiana jail where the officers were being held.
The lawyer said he hasn’t seen the body camera video himself, but its contents were described during the hearing. We have been able to confirm that Norris Greenhouse Jr.’s father is, indeed, Norris Greenhouse, Civil Assistant District Attorney for Avoyelles Parish, where Marksville is located. It was the first meeting between the State Police and Attorney General James “Buddy” Caldwell’s staff since his office took over the prosecution of the case.
But Edmonson said there was no evidence of a warrant, nor any gun at the scene.
The boy’s father was also struck.
Twenty-three-year-old Greenhouse and 32-year-old Derrick Stafford are being held in jail in Marksville.
Jeremy was buried on Monday in Hattiesburg, MS where his mother lives. Jeremy was shot five times in the head and chest and Mr. Few is in serious condition at Rapides Hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana.
An Avoyelles Parish Judge charged Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. with second degree murder Monday.
It’s still unclear what led to the initial vehicle chase between four city marshal deputies, including Stafford and Greenhouse, and Chris Few.
“We just went ahead and got these body cameras for these officers, and I’m glad that we did”, Lemoine said. Jeremy Mardis killed last week in a confrontation with police in Marksville, Louisiana, where his father was severely wounded.
Coroner Dr L.J. Mayeux said it was likely that Jeremy was caught “in the line of fire” as the marshals shot at the driver’s side, with the boy on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
The episode, Riddle said, is “not good for any of us”.
Lt. Stafford is an officer with the Marksville Police Department and Deputy Greenhouse is a full-time city marshal.
Jeansonne said “this was not a threatening situation for the police”.
The extent of the victims’ relationship to the officers is also being investigated since Marksville is such a small town.
