Memorial honoring French victims grows at Boston consulate
The NY Police Department has added additional police at several locations around the city out of an “abundance of caution” during the ongoing attacks in Paris, the NYPD said Friday night.
People are leaving flowers and messages of support at the French Consulate in Boston in solidarity with the people of Paris after Friday night’s deadly attacks.
Andrew Cuomo said he has directed city police and other forces to stay alert for any possible similar attack in the city.
John Miller, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism said Saturday on “CBS This Morning” that there is no specific threat to NY City.
New York, the site of the September 11, 2001 hijacked plane attacks that killed almost 3,000 people and destroyed the World Trade Center’s twin towers, is considered a top target for attacks by Islamist militants. “While there has been no credible threat to our state, law enforcement teams will remain in constant contact with federal and local officials to ensure the safety and security of our citizens”.
The almost simultaneous gun and bomb attacks in Paris were suspected to have been launched by an Islamist militant group, Western security sources said on Friday. The MTA Police Department has stepped up its uniformed and plainclothes presence in Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal as well as other major stations throughout the Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road network. One official said the attackers tossed explosives at the hostages. “We believe this…is isolated to Paris”.
“Specific deployments, at French government locations in NY City, were made immediately after the attacks”, the department said.
Police are also keep a close eye on landmarks and high traffic areas.
In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf’s office said Philadelphia police had increased security and that the public could see heightened security measures elsewhere in the state due to the attacks in Paris.
