Tigers lose to Houston, 35-34
However, the scoring was quiet for the rest of the quarter, as Memphis and Houston failed to get on the board after the first drive.
Without their star quarterback and trailing by as many as 20 points, the nation’s last undefeated Group of 5 team, No. 24 Houston, seemed destined to suffer its first loss of the season and take a body blow to its conference title and New Year’s Six hopes. This week, Paxton Lynch appeared to be rebounding, but his interception with 8:08 left led to a quick Houston touchdown that cut the Tigers’ lead to six. Lynch faked the handoff to Dorceus, rolled left and pitched it to Tevin Jones, who ran 25 yards to the end zone.
Having attempted just six passes entering Saturday night, Postma went 21-of-33 for 236 yards and two total touchdowns. Houston is averaging 44.4 points per game on the season (compared to Memphis’ 44.8) and boast an incredibly balanced attack with over 250 yards per game on the ground and through the air.
Postma wasn’t fazed, though, and drove Houston down the field to set up Farrow’s second touchdown of the game, a 10-yard rush, to get within 13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Ward limped off the field with an injury, and Postma promptly led the Cougars to its first scoring drive of the night.
Details for Saturday’s game are below.
Dorceus had 116 yards on 26 carries with a 6-yard touchdown run halfway through the third quarter.
Lynch has spread the ball around this season as Memphis has thre different receivers with at least 30 catches and more than 500 yards receiving. The University of Houston know goes on the road as the travel to CT. The Cougars finished with 96 rushing yards.
After a Memphis punt, Houston had an opportunity to take the lead, and Postma continued to make plays.
Instead, the Cougars rallied behind backup quarterback Kyle Postma and an opportunistic second-half defense to come from behind and beat No. 21 Memphis 35-34 before a sellout crowd on Saturday at TDECU Stadium.
The win kept Houston undefeated at 10-0, tied with Navy atop the division. While the offense has been humming this season for Memphis the defense has been a bit of an issue and that will be a problem against a Houston team that puts points up in bunches. That win had them ranked No. 13 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings.
