Army Football Team Brings French Flag Onto Field At West Point
The Black Knights took the field with the American flag like usual, but also the French flag, as a show of solidarity after the horrific attacks in Paris on Friday.
Army got on the board first on a Bradshaw three-yard TD – the first time Army scored in the opening quarter in six games.
“This is a magnificent place to play”, said Johnson. “I’ve won a Super Bowl and a national championship, and I can tell you that this place is outstanding”. It was just magnificent. I love the atmosphere. They’ve got something special here.
“Our two-minute drill with the game on the line was awesome, especially because our young quarterback hadn’t done this before”.
“I have the highest amount of respect for those guys, and I just wanted to tell as many of them as I could”, said Lee, who finished 14-for-29 for 252 yards and shook hands with a number of the cadets following the game.
The Arkansas State (7-3, 6-0) defense got stingy after Ben Luckett’s 85-yard touchdown dash for the Warhawks tied the score at 21 with 3:44 left in the first half. But the Green Wave set Andrew DiRocco up with a chance to be the hero if he made a 35-yard field goal with four seconds left.
Marley (nine tackles) and the defense, however, got the stops when the Wave needed them.
Tulane took a 10-9-1 lead in the all-time series.
Among a multitude of issues, the Green Wave’s inability to pick up first downs on third-and-short probably is its most glaring concern offensively.
· Tulane completed its 2015 non-conference slate with a 2-2 record with wins at Army and at home vs. Maine. The last time Tulane played two service academies in one season was 2004 when Tulane hosted Navy (Nov. 6) and Army (Nov. 13) in back-to-back weeks. The other, junior defensive back Caleb McNeill, was directly behind him with the French flag.
· The win on the road was the first for Tulane since defeating Houston on November 8, 2014.
Lee followed with another touchdown pass, a 15-yarder to tight end Kendall Ardoin. The game also airs as a live stream online.
When the Wave tried to run, it failed to convert 11 consecutive times before Rob Kelley gained the necessary yardage on the meaningless drive against Memphis. After getting run over by Georgia Tech with senior safety Darion Monroe suspended, Tulane went to a five-man front and held Navy to a season low for rushing.
Bradshaw pitched badly to Christian Drake and Tulane’s Sean Wilson couldn’t corral the fumble, but the ball squirted out to Parry Nickerson, who scooped it up ran 48-yards for a touchdown.
