President Obama: “Hello, Facebook!”
US President Barack Obama has joined Facebook, but daughters Sasha and Malia needn’t worry about an uncool friend request from dad.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Obama’s first Facebook message centered on one of the tenets of his administration – climate change – and touches on an upcoming visit to France for the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
CNN reports that his first real post in the POTUS page, a video showing him walking on the White House yard, is on climate change, an issue close to Obama’s heart.
Broadcast Journalist Katie Couric posted a simple but cheerful, “Welcome to Facebook, President Obama!!”.
Obama launched his own personal Facebook page on Monday, in a fresh attempt from the social media-savvy president to spread his message through non-traditional channels.
Social media is not just a communicating platform for local people but also for world-known celebrities and public figures who consistently post their thoughts over certain arguments. While we are sure he will use his Facebook for pressing issues, we can’t help but hope to see a selfie or two. In the video, the president urged viewers to be more proactive when it comes to issues pertaining to the environment.
President Obama’s first post was rather lengthy.
“Barack Obama” Facebook account now has more than 45.35 million followers.
More than anything, though, it appears the White House is attempting to establish a presence for the president as a person, not just the chief executive of the federal government.
President Obama added: “We’ve got to preserve this attractive planet of ours for our kids and grandkids”. But we’ve got to do more.
The White House said it hopes Facebook would serve as a two-way street for discussion.
Last week, Obama cited climate concerns as a key reason for rejecting the Keystone XL Pipeline, saying, “America’s now a global leader when it comes to taking serious action to fight climate change”.
