Russia’s Putin lands in Antalya for G20 summit
US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin do not have a formal meeting planned, but White House officials have said the two leaders will have opportunities to talk on the sidelines of the summit.
French president Francois Hollande is the only leader missing at the summit.
He said the G20 views the “engagement” with Malaysia and Asean as important towards efforts in formulating its policies and also development growth at the global level. Bilateral relations have been strengthened by the exchange of visits of leaders of both countries in recent times.
The same day, IS claimed responsibility for the gun and suicide attacks that killed 129 people across Paris late Friday.
While annual G-20 summit often focuses primarily on economic, this year’s meeting will cover a variety of issues, including the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, as well as the civil unrest in Syria and issues of worldwide security and terrorism.
Long before the Paris killings, the Turkish Government placed stringent security controls around Antalya.
The town of Belek has been declared a high-security Red Zone area and a virtual no-go zone for the non-delegates. The country is also confronting renewed conflict with Kurdish militants amid the breakdown of one of Erdogan’s signature achievement’s – a peace process with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
Meanwhile, the three African heads of state who are in Turkey to attend the G20 Summit have held a consultative meeting ahead of the summit which will be officially opened on Sunday. He is probably going to increase points associated to terrorism, local weather change and worldwide cooperation to unearth black cash, amongst others.
“All terrorism is bad, we must leave aside the feeling that our terrorist is bad and your terrorist is good”, Erdogan said.
After January’s attacks in Paris by gunmen on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, the wife of one of the gunmen fled through Turkey to IS-controlled Syria.
Obama called Turkey a strong partner of the United States and other coalition members in the fight against Daesh in Syria and Iraq.
According to a draft statement seen by Reuters, the leaders of the G20 condemned the Paris attacks as “heinous” and said they remained united in fighting terrorism.
