United Nations climate conference to go ahead near Paris despite attacks
Fabius said he would return to Paris after the talks here, and would stand in for French President François Holland at the G-20 Summit Sunday in Turkey, which President Baracj Obama will attend. “Ensuring security to thousands, marching on the streets, will not be an easy task for the government”. They will join delegates from more than 190 countries to work on an agreement to set a global framework to combat climate change, including limits on fossil fuel emissions that will apply for the first time to all nations.
Speaking partly in Filipino, Valte said that Mr. Aquino had not given yet his confirmation about attending the Paris COP before the terror attacks, and therefore any final decision to skip it should not be seen as impelled by security fears in the French capital. Then there will be the demonstrators, there to put pressure on politicians to find a meaningful solution.
Despite the deadly attacks carried out by terrorists linked to the Islamic State, the United Nations has no plans to cancel the summit.
According to Reuters, the attacks killed 127 people and wounded hundreds more.
Eight gunmen and suicide bombers targeted cafes, restaurants, a theatre and the national football stadium in what French president Francois Hollande labelled an “act of war”. The operation will require 30,000 police officers. Environmentalist AL Gore stopped his Reality and Live Earth climate change webcast, which was supposed to run 24 hours from the Eiffel Tower, in the afternoon after the assaults. In order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, he said the world must embrace a carbon-free vision by the middle of the century. “The incident will certainly impact the external mobilization for the People’s climate march and any other side events”.
Organisers of a march to press for climate action planned for Paris on November 29, the eve of the summit, said they would meet on Monday “to discuss ways forward”, said Alice Jay, director of the citizens’ campaign group Avaaz and one of the organisers.
Though the climate conference is being held annually for the past over 20 years, the forthcoming summit in Paris has been attracting lot of attention because the world is expected to arrive at a global climate deal at COP21.
