Justin Trudeau sworn in as Canada’s second youngest prime minister ever
Refugee Minister John McCallum said it remained the government’s firm intention to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees by year-end.
Former failed Liberal leader Stephane Dion, who lost an election for the party previously, is the new foreign affairs minister, while Toronto businessman Bill Morneau is the new finance minister.
Trudeau is the second youngest prime minister of Canada. But he and his family will not be moving immediately into his childhood home, the official prime minister’s residence overlooking the Ottawa River at 24 Sussex Drive. Trudeau will deliver a Speech from the Throne the next day, on December 4. It is reported that his new cabinet included equal number of men and women – the first time it happened in Canada.
For the first time ever, the Canadian public was officially invited to witness the swearing-in ceremony in person. Cabinets are constructed with an eye toward diversity, geography, and now, gender balance, but ultimately these are the people the prime minister has entrusted with the future of our great country.
Her appointment marks a change from the government of former prime minister Stephen Harper.
A large crowd gathered in a carnival-like atmosphere for the event under a bright blue sky and colorful fall foliage.
And although he initially made the headlines for being quite the looker, the feminist website Jezebel declared that “the sexiest thing about Justin Trudeau is his cabinet’s gender parity”.
Sajjan, a former lieutenant-colonel and combat veteran with Canadian Armed Forces, and a former detective constable with Vancouver Police Department, was named Minister of National Defence.
When asked about the observance of gender equality in his cabinet, he answered, “Because it’s 2015”.
After taking the oath, Trudeau introduced his cabinet.
We’ll wait to see how he is able to give the middle class a tax break, a new tax free child benefit…and cut e.i. premiums…and pay for it by hiking taxes on the wealthiest one per cent.
Trudeau’s cabinet also includes 2 aboriginal members of parliament and 3 Sikh politicians. They are scheduled to hold their first meeting in the afternoon and then face the media – a departure from the Harper era. Trudeau will also participate in a Google Hangout – an interactive video chat – with kids from five different schools across the country.
