Will Daniel Craig Return for Another Bond Film?
That leaves Spectre on top of the box office for an easy second weekend at the top, despite a 62% decline from last Friday to $10.3 million, crossing $100 million after eight days in the process.
But several newcomers are facing a cool reception from moviegoers.
“Spectre” looks likely to decline about 50% from its opening weekend and should close out the weekend near $135 million. The Bollywood musical romance Prem Ratan Dhan Payo also had an impressive weekend, earning $2.4 million in only 286 theaters.
The box-office duo of James Bond and Charlie Brown again dominated North American movie theatres, while Angelina Jolie Pitt’s “By the Sea” caused barely a ripple. Still, Spectre has more than made up ground globally, and in China, it earned more than $48 million, making it the biggest Chinese debut ever for an global 2D film.
“Peanuts” is holding nicely, bolstered by strong reviews and word-of-mouth. Distributed in conjunction with Lionsgate, “Love the Coopers” stars Diane Keaton, John Goodman, and Alan Arkin and cost $17 million to produce.
Deadline projects Spectre for a $35-40 million weekend, which would actually be a fair hold.
The animated “Peanuts” took in approximately $5.6 million Friday and is on track to gross $23 million for its second weekend. This can serve as a leverage on changing the estimated closing gross income to $80 million (RMB 500 million) as compared to $122 million.
“Spectre” has earned more than $105 million domestically and $325 million worldwide. With “Our Brand Is Crisis” underperforming, the lack of traction for “The 33” gives Warner Bros. the dubious distinction of releasing back-to-back flops of films set in South America.
Alcon Entertainment financed the $25 million production, which stars Antonio Banderas and is directed by Patricia Riggen.
“By the Sea” carries a modest $10 million price tag and has been positioned by Universal as an homage to European art films. It’s ideal counter-programming to Bond, but more importantly families continue to bring the kids out in moderate droves and it has the nostalgia factor built into it. Like Mockingjay Part 2’s looming release that will look to dethrone Bond, the only kids movie competition that The Peanuts Movie has to worry about is a few weeks away when Pixar unleashes their second movie of 2015, The Good Dinosaur, just before Thanksgiving weekend on November 25.
It’s also tough to predict what will happen with Love the Coopers. The movie reported did not make a mark in Germany and Italy.
