Chelsea legend: Why I’m happy for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Tottenham on the other hand were by far the better team in the fixture, with the Gunners failing to test Hugo Lloris in the first half, while Harry Kane made it three goals in his last two league meetings against the Gunners.
The Gunners – missing the likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Hector Bellerin, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck to injury – eventually levelled when Gibbs bundled in a first league goal since March 2012 on 77 minutes to set up a grandstande finale. We look back to yet another entertaining derby and provide the five talking points.
Kane was equally frustrated not to have seen his side double their lead but believes Spurs proved they have the fitness to compete on all fronts this season. “We can never give up, we know what it [the derby] means to everyone, to the fans, the players, the club”.
Those derbies come against in-form West Ham and beleaguered Premier League champions Chelsea, with the Blues’ poor start to their title defence offering the chance for a different side to challenge for a top-four finish.
“Obviously you want more when you equalise but we have to be happy after the first half”. He gets in good positions and it shows he’s an intelligent player. “He gave us a big lift when he came on, he was fresh and gave everyone a lift with the goal”.
Pochettino was 13 minutes away from becoming just the second Spurs manager to win more than one Premier League match against Wenger, although the Argentine revelled in Tottenham extending their unbeaten top-flight run to 11 matches.
“He was dizzy and I was sitting there, not knowing whether to take him off or not. He has grown into a very great player as he has added commitment, leadership qualities and responsibility and I’m very pleased with his development”.
“We always have confidence in him”, Pochettino said about Kane. “We showed great character and personality”, he said.
“We’re not just drawing where we’re hanging on, we’re drawing where we’re playing very well and there are chances we could be winning these games”.
“It was unexpected coming from the back, but we have very little offensive options at the moment on the bench”, he continued.
