Houston remains unbeaten with wild comeback win over Memphis
Postma came in and UH on the board and orchestrated a huge 4th quarter.
One week after Memphis had its undefeated run ended by a division opponent, Houston narrowly avoided the same fate when Memphis came to town, as the Cougars came back from down 20 points in the fourth quarter to win.
The Texans’ JJ Watt and DeAndre Hopkins, former major league pitcher Roger Clemens, who spent three seasons with the Astros and pitched for the Texas Longhorns, and Houston rapper Bun B were part of a record crowd of 42,159 at TDECU Stadium. I think you have to go back to the Ole Miss game and watch them; they’re somewhat similar to us in style offensively. The Tigers scored 20 consecutive points to begin the game, including a 41-yard field goal by Elliott on their opening drive.
That momentum carried over into the third quarter as Postma led a long touchdown drive to start the half, cutting Memphis’ lead to 20-14.
“It’s indescribable”, said Postma, who was with Houston as a redshirt freshman in 2013 before going to Trinity Valley Community College in Texas last season.
Both teams also feature very explosive offenses with Memphis averaging 352 passing yards per game ranking at ninth in the nation and Houston averaging 273 rushing yards per game which ranks at seventh in the country.
Lynch connected with tight end Alan Cross (38 yards) and tailback Doroland Dorceus (61) on touchdown passes, wide receiver Tevin Jones (25) and Dorceus (6) had scoring runs, and Elliott booted 41- and 29-yard field goals to give Memphis a seemingly safe 34-14 lead with 14:51 to play.
COUGARS’ D: Houston gave up 589 yards to Memphis, its most yards allowed this season.
The Cougars are now tied for second in the nation in fumble recoveries with 11 on the season, they are also tied for seventh in the nation in interceptions with 14 on the season, three of which that have turned into “pick 6’s, finally they are tied for 10 in the nation for sacks, accumulating 28 total on the season”.
The Cougars used that spark to mount a bit of a comeback. After Memphis failed to convert on a late drive the Cougars would take advantage. While it is unlikely that they will be cracking the top-10, even if they beat Navy in two weeks, Houston could be playing in a big bowl game come the postseason. He entered the game in the second half. Bonner meantime has a 30 yard touchdown catch.
Memphis: QB Paxton Lynch. The sophomore finished with 236 yards passing and one passing score to go with 42 rushing yards and the game-winning rushing touchdown. Lynch has thrown for 3,019 yards and 19 touchdowns with only two interceptions. First-year head coach Tom Herman and his team are chasing the first undefeated season in program history.
“The offense they play at Memphis is similar to us, ” Herman said.
