Hungary Qualify Euro 2016
Krisztian Nemeth and Hungary got a 2-1 over Norway on Sunday, winning their two-legged aggregate tie by 3-1 and advancing to next summer’s UEFA European Championship in France.
Despite the visitors needing two goals after the break to qualify, it was Hungary who looked more likely to find a second and it arrived late on through an own goal from Markus Henriksen.
GOING to the European Championships.
The Hungarians had already given themselves a great chance of qualification after winning the first leg 1-0 in Norway. The hosts were missing Zoltan Gera through suspension.
Then, a long ball down the left flank in the 14th minute from Tamas Kadar found striker Tamas Priskin to add another goal to the score.
Norway’s Haitam Aleesami had a close-range opportunity saved by Gabor Kiraly, who was making a record-equalling 101st appearance for Hungary, with Even Hovland then heading the resulting corner wide of the mark.
The two-legged series capped off a campaign in which Nemeth featured in each of his country’s last seven Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Henriksen pulled a consolation goal back three minutes from time but it was too little, too late for the Norwegians.
“I have to congratulate my team, the association president Sandor Csanyi, and also Pal Dardai, who I took over from and he left this team for me”, said Hungary’s German coach Bernd Storck who took charge in July.
As time ticked away, Marcus Pedersen was denied by Kiraly after Richard Guzmics deflected an Alexander Tettey attempt into the path of the substitute.
Henriksen diverted a powerful corner towards his own net and it flew in via a combination of the post and Nyland.
