Dunkin’ keeps holiday cups, Starbucks goes PC
De Blasio was seen swigging from a red Starbucks cup at the end of Veterans Day parade in midtown.
Starbucks’ new holiday cups – colored a featureless, warm red around its green logo, instead of its usual white – sparked anger from a few Christian groups who protested that the cup didn’t include any explicit acknowledgement of Christmas.
But the donut chain’s more festive decorations – the cups have the word “Joy” written on them, encircled by holiday wreaths – still drew criticism from Donald Trump. People including Donald Trump and actor Rom Lowe criticized Starbucks for the cup, seeing the plain design as a form of political correctness that plays down the religious nature of Christmas.
In a statement to Jezebel, Starbucks’ vice president of design and content Jeffrey Fields said, “In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs”.
“We’re embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it”. When I choose Starbucks, I know I’ll pay more and I know I’m paying for the freshness and taste. “So now, they’re taking a tiny fraction of people’s response and attributing it to all conservative Christians”.
“Even if you had zero approval and the design was finished, it would still take at least a month or two months to get it printed and distributed”, Dave Tupper, creative director of the design agency Huge, told NBC News. That’s why they’re just plain red. Critics say the designs lack the Christmas spirit of earlier versions, which depicted snowflakes, snowmen and holiday trees. Starbucks also said its design invites customers to doodle on the cups, with the simple red background representing a blank canvas.
“If I become president, we’re all going to be saying “Merry Christmas” again”.
“I have one of the most successful Starbucks, in Trump Tower”, he told a large crowd at his campaign rally Monday night in Springfield, Illinois. Should it matter what a coffee house does with its cups at the holidays?
