Texas Tech clinches bowl bid on senior day
Texas Tech ended a three-game losing streak with a 59-44 victory over Kansas State in a Big 12 game on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
Tech’s Patrick Mahomes threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Justin Stockton, and DeAndre Washington rushed for three more.
Or maybe Texas Tech just wanted to be cruel on the kickoff and kick it away because, well, it’s not like Kansas State was going to win the game at that point.
Stockton’s touchdowns catches were 17 and 20 yards, and he added a 7-yard rushing touchdown.
Washington’s touchdown runs covered 80, 5 and 12 yards.
Tech would look to cement the game with a drive spanning the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th, with a 16 play, 82 yard drive that took over six and a half minutes to put Tech up 52-28.
Kansas State (3-6, 0-6) quarterback Joe Hubener rushed for three 1-yard touchdowns and threw for two more.
The lone goal came in the 26th minute as all-time Texas Tech scoring leader Janine Beckie connected from just more than 8 yards out. “And then against Baylor they really did a good job against the run so I didn’t see this coming but once we got hot he just kept going”.
The Wildcats wouldn’t quit as they would respond with a scoring drive which would end on a six yard touchdown pass on fourth down and goal to bring Kansas State to within 18 at 52-34, but they would miss the two-point conversion with 7:25 left in the game. “We have to win out”. The over is 8-0 in Red Raiders last 8 home games and the Red Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in November while the over is 9-1 in Red Raiders last 10 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
Texas Tech let a 21-point lead dwindle to 7 points early in the third quarter after Hubener scored his third touchdown. “I forget who said it, ‘The only man who is truly beaten is he who refuses to get up.’ So that’s not us; we’re going to keep getting up and keep fighting and leave it all out on the line and whatever happens, happens”.
The Wildcats would come out on offense again throwing the ball and moving into Texas Tech territory, but a forced fumble by the Red Raider defense would give Tech the ball back at their own 37. We have to win these next three.
A turnover by the Wildcats turned into a touchdown for the Red Raiders in the first quarter. Zach Reuter fumbled after catching a 10-yard pass from Hubener and JahShawn Johnson recovered. It was a great look for a crucial game, and harkened back to another time Kansas State made their way down to Lubbock.
Both teams had similar seasons leading up to the tournament with both teams having played and beat the same opponents including TCU and Florida Atlantic.
Washington’s 80-yard scamper for score was a career long for him and was the team’s longest run of the season. The Wildcats have lost five in a row – including four versus top-20 foes – against teams that are a combined 33-2 now.
