After Paris Attacks, Cuomo Puts State Law Enforcers on Alert
The gatherings followed a day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed One World Trade Center to light up in blue, white and red “as we stand in solemn solidarity with the people of France, just as they have done for us in our own times of tragedy”, he said in a statement.
Cuomo also said it is important to note that these are precautionary measures, not based on any specific intelligence linking the US and the attacks in Paris. Meanwhile, members of the NYPD’s Hercules Team-a heavily armed counter-terrorism unit-have been seen in Times Square, and police are ramping up constitutionally questionable bag searches, in subway stations and elsewhere.
According to the Associated Press, dozens of police cars were seen leaving Times Square as the NYPD deployed a “Critical Response Command” to strategic densely populated locations within the city.
The National Basketball Association, which had 11 games on the schedule Friday night, said it was raising security at each of the places.
Before the start of Army’s college football game against Tulane, Army defensive back Caleb McNeill carried the French flag alongside a teammate carrying the American flag as the players ran onto the field.
A league statement says it has been told by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation “that there are no known threats against NFL stadiums”.
He also called for vigilance on the part of NY law enforcement. and reminded New Yorkers to stay alert and report suspicious activity.
The U.S. Capitol Police in Washington fostered patrols around the Capitol complex, a spokeswoman said.
“The St. Petersburg Police Department has a crisis plan that it updates and practices on a regular basis, agency spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said in an email”.
In Washington, additional law enforcement officers were deployed to French-owned sites and other high-profile locations out of “an abundance of caution”, said police spokesman Officer Sean Hickman.
Nonetheless patrols were being increased and security measures were being stepped up nationwide after more than 120 people were killed and hundreds more injured in Friday’s assault on the French capital.
In Boston, the police department said it deployed additional resources and was working with national authorities but saw no credible threat in the city, where home made bombs were set off by Islamist militant sympathizers at the Boston Marathon finish line in April 2013.
MA State Police said they took “several actions” after the Paris attacks, including increasing security around the State House in Boston.
Security for the World Cup qualifier between the U.S. and St Vincent has also been increased, St Louis police said.
On Long Island, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said Nassau Police “are intensifying patrols in all areas and will increase patrols at significant public events”.
DHSES has been in contact with key local public safety officials following the attacks in Paris. Thus far, there have not been any threats to either the airport or the trains.
