College GameDay headed to Ohio State in Week 12
Ohio State has 10 wins in 10 tries this season and the No. 3 ranking in the College Football Playoff. The Spartans (9-1) face undefeated Ohio State next Saturday at Columbus.
MI dominated the first set of the match, going on a 6-1 run to force an Ohio State timeout early on.
Almost all the postgame talk centered on what’s ahead: Saturday’s duel with 9-1 MI State, followed by a rivalry-week trip to MI.
As Illinois’ offense skidded to a near halt without a running game, Ohio State generated a touchdown drive just before halftime.
Of course, if MI keeps winning, the Rose Bowl – and maybe more – are in sight.
Adams started and ran for 141 yards with Notre Dame’s leading rusher C.J. Prosise sidelined while recovering from a concussion.
But then, as it usually does, the braintrust flipped the script and gave us a steady diet of Elliott in the second half. “All three of us are playing for something so it’s going to be a big-time atmosphere”, he said.
Here’s a few things we learned from Saturday’s game. “We played a little better than past year”. Of that, 131 came in the second half as the Buckeyes, challenged to protect quarterback J.T. Barrett when he wanted to pass, still were able to knock enough Illini defenders out of the way to spring Elliott and Barrett (74 yards rushing). If Iowa would get to Indianapolis at 12-0 and lost to MI, it could be ranked higher than Ohio State and therefore get the nod to the Rose, but at 12-1, it would be one of the Top 11. Everybody else up front, from Tyquan Lewis to Tommy Schutt, who had a sack in his first game back from a broken wrist, to backup tackle Michael Hill, is following his lead. What is glaringly evident is the way the defense plays with Barrett calling the shots. It’s been something that would have been hard to forecast for much of the season as the Spartans’ defense has had plenty of problems in the back end as injuries have hit hard. That’s the only negative.
“As advertised, a good team”, Karras said. He finished 18 of 28 for 231 yards and two touchdown passes, while Golson was just 5 of 9 for 52 yards. Elliott would finish the day with two touchdowns and 181 yards rushing on 27 carries. Other winners for the Buckeyes were Mark Belanger in the 100 back (49.42, ) Andrew Appleby in the 200 back (1:50.45, ) Matt McHugh in the 100 fly (48.11, ) and Colin Zeng who took the 1-meter (366.83) and 3-meter (406.80) diving events.
“That was one of those moments where I just challenged the offensive line”, Meyer said. Only a week ago seemingly nothing could go wrong, but this week the IL offense couldn’t get much to go right.
“They’re real good”, Fighting Illini interim coach Bill Cubit said at a news conference.
“I went to pull, and he came faster than what I was ready for”, Price said describing the play. “We’re definitely appreciative of Ezekiel Elliott”. That’s why there up there where they are.
It won’t be easy moving forward for Urban Meyer’s squad, but so far the team remains unblemished as they enter the final gantlet of the regular season.
