Kyle Busch: Wins DAV 200
The four-driver field for the Championship Round of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup was settled in a rain-shortened race Sunday.
NASCAR’s final race before the championship finale began after a rain delay Sunday that pushed the start at Phoenix global Raceway into the evening. The four drivers that will be competing next week, are Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. Today’s race is 312 laps at Phoenix global Raceway. It’s not NASCAR’s fault. Carl Edwards was only six points behind Truex in the standings for a spot in the final four.
Johnson led the first 44 laps but a speeding penalty during his first pit stop following the Lap 40 competition caution, knocked the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevy to 30th. But he still climbed to seventh and might have been able to challenge teammate Harvick for the win.
“I don’t even think it was a penalty”, Kurt Busch said after the race ended.
Meanwhile, Earnhardt had no guilt in celebrating the win.
Gordon was the only Chase driver to win during the Eliminator Round, taking the checkered flag at Martinsville.
It could be feast or starvation for three organizations trying to advance their drivers in NASCAR’s title race. “It works out for a few and some it doesn’t”. Last week: Jimmie Johnson raced to his fourth consecutive Texas fall victory, taking the lead from Chase contender Brad Keselowski with three laps left.
“It’s kind of bittersweet”, Harvick said.
Yet time and again, upsets have indeed happened in motorsport when it’s come to the crunch.
Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett said Dez Bryant should have handled Thursday’s tirade directed at the media differently. but “I believe that 100 percent of our guys do things the right way about 98 percent of the time”.
NHRA: Del Worsham raced to his first amusing vehicle season title and went on to take the event victory in the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona. Joey Logano’s only shot at advancement in the Chase for the Sprint Cup was to win at Phoenix…. Here’s how it all went down on a long Sunday at Phoenix global Raceway.
“There’s only one lap I want to lead, and that’s the last one”, he said.
His team has been forced to scramble to accommodate a potential championship into the weekend list of celebratory activities at Homestead, already jammed packed with goodbye goodies.
“It don’t make any difference what the system is, somebody’s going to play it”, said Richard Petty, who won seven titles when points accumulated over the entire season determined the championship.
