Here’s Why Al Gore Is “Optimistic” About the Paris Climate Talks
“24 Hours of Reality and Live Earth: The World Is Watching is about making sure the people of the world are informed and engaged so that they can make their voices heard in their capitals and at the negotiating table in Paris”, Live Earth co-founder Gore said in a statement.
At the time of attacks, U2, in Paris added, “We watched in disbelief and shock at the unfolding events in Paris and our hearts go out to all the victims and their families across the city tonight”. “Our thoughts are with all who have been affected and the entire nation of France”, Gore said in a statement.
At least 135 people have been killed in a series of shootings and explosions across the city.
Gore will also host a 24-hour telethon from the Eiffel Tower. Elton John and Bon Jovi were to perform in the broadcast, which was planned with a motive to gain awareness for a Climate Change Summit that is going to be held in Paris on November 30. Other concerts were to be broadcast from locations around the globe, from Rio de Janeiro to Miami, Sydney and Cape Town.
Gore, who has become an outspoken climate activist, timed the event for three weeks before world leaders are scheduled to meet in Paris for a United Nations event in the hopes of reaching an global agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. French president Francois Hollande declared a rare state of emergency in the country, closing off its borders, clubs, streets and other activities.
