OR beats No. 22 North Carolina women 79-77
Bando hit a 3 for the Ducks with three minutes left.
It wasn’t a blowout, which was about the only potential downfall for Temple heading into a nationally-televised game at the Naval Academy. Young teams can lose confidence easily, butDunphy has a few things feel good about as they move on with their still-new season.
Devin Coleman led the Owls (0-1) with 19 points.
That’s what happens when you score 125 combined points in two games-people start to notice.
Looking at Miami’s total yardage – 425 yards and 25 first downs – you’d think the offensive line played better than what the grade says.
Fairfield (0-1) dropped their opener to Yale 70-57 and drew the short straw having to play UNC in their second game. Quenton DeCosey put up eleven points and Shawn Alston contributed twelve points to help with the scoring.
Garret Covington sank two free throws with 10 seconds remaining and Western IL upset No. 17 at the Kohl Center in Milwaukee.
Kennedy Meeks had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and three other Tar Heels scored in double figures Friday night in a 91-67 win over Temple. The offensive line continued to struggle in protecting Kaaya during Saturday’s 59-21 loss to North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
The Hokies came up victorious in the long rally to open the match, earning the first point of the frame.
Even a lackluster performance by the forward group isn’t a huge red flag, at least not yet. The Tar Heels held a 49-32 edge on the boards and rarely let the Owls get follow-up shots.
“Britt and Berry did a very good job for them; their threes were daggers for us … and their post-feeding and transition were good”, Temple coach Fran Dunphy said. “This is a great team and guys are committed to what we’ve been doing and guys are excited for the opportunities we get”. “I thought we had a lack of execution, a lack of effort, and toughness out there early”.
Senior forward Perry Ellis contributed 16 points and junior guard Wayne Selden added 15, as KU won its 43rd straight home opener.
Senior forward Jordan Loveridge added 24 points for the Utes, who overcame a sluggish first half start.
“We weren’t as good as we needed to be rebounding the basketball against that size and athleticism”, Dunphy said.
“I’m concerned about the way we played today”, Williams said, “but I’m not anxious about our team”.
What can Brown do for you? ‘That’s a heck of a first game.
Freshman Maite Cazorla had a dazzling debut, finishing with nine points, nine assists, four steals and just two turnovers.
“I like those numbers”, Dunphy said.
And it’s not like Miami didn’t build themselves up as a program by having an aggressive level of swagger, so they just got a taste of their own medicine.
UNC still played a pretty solid game, but they are going to show the most growth once Kenny Britt or Joel Berry is able to understand the problem, find a solution and settle the team down so that they can solve it together without Roy Williams calling a time out.
