Obama says United States has ‘contained’ ISIS militants
“The killing of innocent people, based on a twisted ideology, is an attack not just on France, not just on Turkey, but it’s an attack on the civilized world”, Obama said after meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Paris attack comes less than a week after France’s military said a French airstrike had targeted an oil distribution center in Syria controlled by Islamic State militants in an attempt to cut a crucial source of the group’s funding.
But the violence in Paris that killed at least 127 people will dramatically change the dynamic of the talks in Antalya, Turkey.
The Turkish resort of Antalya has virtually been converted into a fortress, with thousands of security personnel deployed and high-tech surveillance systems dotting every nook and corner to ensure that leaders of the world’s 20 top economies, come to no harm from extremist groups over the next two days.
Obama arrived in Turkey today for the G20 Summit amid an urgent global call to confront terrorism in the wake of the Paris serial attacks.
Obama, whom Democrats and Republicans alike have urged to take a more aggressive approach toward eradicating the Islamic State in war-torn Syria, met Saturday with his National Security Council before departing for Turkey to discuss the latest intelligence regarding the attacks in Paris.
In a fresh reminder of the Islamic State’s expanding capacity to wreak havoc, five Turkish police officers were injured Sunday when a suicide bomber blew himself up during a police raid on a suspected IS hideout near the Syrian border.
The official economic agenda in Turkey and Asia was already likely to be overshadowed by a series of intense meetings between Obama and his counterparts about the Syrian civil war, the refugee crisis in Europe, disputes with President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation and ongoing tensions in the South China Sea. “Until Assad is no longer a lightning rod for Sunnis in Syria and that entire region is no longer a proxy war for Shia-Sunni conflict, we’re going to continue to have problems”, he said.
“This terror attack was not just against the French people, it was against the whole of humanity”, Erdogan said.
Schiff also suggested that eradicating ISIS could take 15 to 20 years without ground support from such countries as Jordan and Turkey – from where Islamic State warriors appear to be gaining passage from Syria into Europe.
He didn’t say when the carrier, which will boost the air power of the U.S.-led coalition conducting airstrikes, will leave the French Mediterranean port of Toulon.
Ultimately, Erdogan shares Obama’s desire to remove Assad from his throne in Syria, but the two leaders have disagreed on a plan of action for that.
He said Turkey had been a “strong partner” with the US-led coalition in going after IS in Syria and Iraq.
Until launching the airstrike campaign, France had held back on engaging in Syria, citing concern over playing into Syrian President Bashar Assad’s hand and the need for such action to be covered by global law.
