California College Student Studying overseas Is First American Killed In Deadly
A music executive and a British man who worked for the rock band Eagles of Death Metal were among the people killed by terrorists Friday night as the group, which originates in Palm Desert, performed at the Bataclan in Paris, it was reported Monday.
One emotional student told the crowd that she hoped Gonzalez would keep designing “badass stuff” in heaven.
The young woman pretended she was dead on the floor for more than an hour, and managed to stay alive. “She had big decisions, when she went to do something she committed to whatever she was doing”.
The student killed in the string of shootings and explosions was identified as Nohemi Gonzalez, a third-year design student at California State University, Long Beach.
Her friends managed to escape, but Gonzalez was wounded and later died of her injuries at a hospital, said Jeet Joshee, associate vice president for worldwide education at the university.
“We all encouraged them to do it; we just thought it was going to be just an incredible experience”, he says. “We will also extend support to all students, faculty and staff who are in need”. Her aunt, Sandra Felt, said she was fulfilling a dream, and that the college junior always wanted to learn French.
San Diego State University newscenter released a statement regarding the terrorist attacks in Paris.
Professor Michael Laforte of the Design department said in official statements, that “Nohemi was something of a star in our department, she was a shining star”. The other 16 have been accounted for and are safe, university officials said. Specific details of her passing are not available at this time.
The California school was planning a vigil to mourn Gonzalez for 4 p.m. Sunday.
“There’s no question that the celebration has now taken on a somewhat somber tone”, Carbaugh said.
Gov. Jerry Brown said flags would be flown at half-staff at the Capitol for victims of the terror attacks that killed at least 129 people.
“We as a city could not be more heartbroken”, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said at the conference. Nohemi Gonzalez. I love you sunshine.
