Governor: MS won’t be accepting Syrian refugees
Hutchinson says he’s keeping the refugees in his prayers but won’t support a solution that “poses risk to Arkansans”. “Until we have a process in place that achieves that goal, I am calling on Governor Cuomo to stop plans to accept Syrian refugees”.
“Until we can sort out the bad guys, we must not be foolish”, Republican presidential contender Ben Carson said after a Nevada campaign swing Monday.
The Paris attacks have elevated national security in the presidential contest. But Gov. John Hickenlooper said Monday the federal government needs to make sure the verification process for refugees is “as stringent as possible”.
During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Carson had said that it’s a mistake to let Syrian refugees in “Because why wouldn’t they infiltrate them with people who are ideologically opposed to us?” The average wait time for a refugee to be cleared to enter the U.S.is about two years, but often longer for people from Syria and elsewhere.
“And so if someone has never made a ripple in the pond in Syria in a way that would get their identity or their interest reflected in our database, we can query our database until the cows come home, but there will be nothing show up because we have no record of them”, Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey said during a House hearing last month. But there have been no Syrian refugees relocated in Alabama.
Abbott urged the president to halt his plans to resettle thousands of Syrian refugees in the United States, arguing the government could not provide safety guarantees. He also asked the Obama administration to work with Georgia officials to confirm the backgrounds of Syrian refugees already resettled in Georgia.
In September, the White House announced plans to accept an additional 10,000 refugees from Syria to help Europe handle the influx of migrants.
On the Democratic side, the governors of Pennsylvania and Washington State said they will continue working with the federal government to admit Syrian refugees.
The governor wonders if there are a few gaps in security measures that need to be tightened before any refugees come here. Republican Gov.-elect Matt Bevin’s stance is at odds with Kentucky’s current governor.
“It is irresponsible and severely disconcerting to place individuals, who may have ties to ISIS, in a state without the state’s knowledge or involvement”, Jindal said in his letter Saturday.
“That’s shameful”, the president said.

Carson joins other GOP presidential candidates expressing caution or outright opposition to resettling Syrian refugees in the U.S.
Obama, speaking Monday from Turkey where he is attending a summit of the world’s top economies, said it is “very important… that we do not close our hearts to these victims” of Middle East violence.
However, the Republican governor said states might not be able to stop refugees because “this is a federal program”.
“Michigan is a welcoming state, and we are proud of our rich history of immigration”, said MI Gov. Rick Snyder. Rick Wheeler, the Baptist Association’s lead missional strategist, said government officials have a duty to protect the borders and ensure the safety of citizens but that there also should be compassion for those seeking asylum in the US from war-torn countries.
Beyond that, he said Congress should pass legislation that would block funding for the relocation of refugees to Florida.
