‘Memento’ Is Getting a Remake
They’re also one of the companies behind NBC’s planned TV sequel to Cruel Intentions, and we should probably expect to see them make use of a few of those other titles soon.
It’s an undeniable fact that in the modern movie industry, if something once had a few degree of success that somebody will eventually try to remake it, but this news does raise the question of what the point of a Memento remake actually is.
Memento starred Guy Pearce as a man who is tracking down his wife’s killer but suffers from a unique from of memory loss. Co-starring Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano, the film was lauded for its nonlinear narrative structure and motifs of memory, perception, grief, and self-deception. “The bar is set high thanks to the brilliance of Christopher Nolan, but we wouldn’t want it any other way”. “It’s a big responsibility to deliver something that lives up to the mastery of the original, but we are extremely excited and motivated to bring this puzzle back to life and back into the minds of moviegoers”, stated Bacardi.
It was originally adapted from Memento Mori, a short story written by Christopher Nolan’s brother, Jonathan, though the jury’s still out on whether either of the Nolans will be involved in AMBI Pictures remake.
This is veiled language that basically means: Memento was popular and financially successful and we own the remake rights so let’s milk this property for all that we can. Remember, this film came out several years before iPhones existed. Memento is built entirely around a rather contrived gimmick, and while the result is great, that speaks more to the quality of Christopher Nolan’s filmmaking than it does the strength of the central idea, which could have failed spectacularly. And while acknowledging Nolan’s movie is a “masterpiece”, AMBI execs Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi are gonna do it anyway.
AMBI Group is active in the distribution of various movie projects in Italy and throughout the world through its satellite company AI Entertainment, a company Iervolino founded in 2011.
