Paris attacks: Bataclan concert hall and other targeted locations before and
Two French law enforcement officials say a collective panic in several Paris neighbourhoods, including Plaza de Republique, was a false alarm.
Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said three suicide attackers died near the stadium, three in the concert hall, and one further south on the same boulevard. Belgian authories on Saturday made arrests they said were tied to the attacks. Gunmen attacked the two locations wielding Kalashnikovs and shouting “Allahu Akbar”. He said police and military reinforcements would be deployed to key public buildings.
– French police issue a wanted notice for Salah Abdeslam, a 26-year-old man born in Brussels, who they say is unsafe and should not be approached. “This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share”.
She said she is now on edge after the terror attacks rocked the city she loves.
In Paris, the shining sun and warm air felt cruelly incongruous. He said France – which is part of a U.S.-led coalition bombing suspected IS targets in Syria and Iraq and also has troops fighting militants in Africa – “will be merciless toward the barbarians of Islamic State group”. One witness heard a gunman blaming President Hollande for intervening in Syria.
The Home Secretary said Britain’s security plan for tackling terrorist attacks will be looked at again after the Paris terror plot and pledged that any “lessons” would be learnt. A judicial official and lawmaker Jean-Pierre Gorges confirmed his identity. The attackers kill many during the initial assault, but they also seized about 100 hostages and began executing them.
The black vehicle was apparently used by the two shooters who fired at the Le Carillon, Petit Cambodge, and La Bonne Biere restaurants and bars in central Paris on Friday night, killing 20 people. But we have always said that there is no such thing as zero risk.
On the streets, the entire nation was enveloped in mourning. Flags were lowered and Notre Dame Cathedral – closed to tourists like many Paris sites – planned a special church service later Sunday for victims’ families.
Quentin Bongard said he left one of the targeted cafes after a fight with his girlfriend just moments before the attacks. I did not understand what was going on. “And they want to terrorize basic, everyday life”.
Yet even in their grief, residents were defiant about the lifestyle that has made their city a world treasure. Olivier Bas was among several hundred who gathered late Saturday at the site of the Bataclan hall massacre. “When the day of final judgment comes, they will not go to paradise”. The attack on the Bataclan was the most vicious and prolonged.
The attacks on France’s capital last night were sophisticated and coordinated. It’s a route tens of thousands of people fleeing war and poverty in Syria and elsewhere have been using. As the attackers repeatedly fire on the audience, people escape from side doors of the venue, a few dragging bodies with them.
“The big question on everyone’s mind is: Were these attackers – if they turn out to be connected to one of the groups in Syria – were they homegrown terrorists or were they returning fighters?” said Brian Michael Jenkins, a terrorism expert.
Poland’s prospective minister for European affairs, Konrad Szymanski, said that in light of the attacks, Poland would not comply with an EU plan to accept refugees unless it received “guarantees of security”.
Fabius said Sunday on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Turkey that the decision to conduct airstrikes in Raqqa against Islamic State targets was a “political” one and that France had to be “present and active” following Friday’s attacks that killed 129 people.
