Sean Payton Press Conference Following Loss To Redskins
Kirk Cousins threw for a career-high four touchdowns – each one longer than any scoring pass he’d completed all season – to lead the Washington Redskins past the New Orleans Saints 47-14 on Sunday.
Sunday, a week after a series of self-inflicted wounds contributed to a Redskins loss to the Patriots, Cousins’ performance in a 47-14 win over the Saints in Washington had one teammate breaking out his best impression of the QB.
The Saints came roaring back with a 5 play, 83 yard drive of their own that culminated with a 4 yard TD pass from Drew Brees to Brandin Cooks to make the score 7-7.
Cousins’ 295 first-half passing yards were the most by a Redskins quarterback in the opening two quarters of a game in records available dating back to 1991. The running back, Chris Thompson had a nice showing and wide receiver Jamison Crowder continued to impress in the game as he caught a few passes.
The Saints have allowed 130 points and 1,412 yards in the last three games.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees said the team’s path to improvement will begin during the week-long break from practices before the next game November 29 at the Houston Texans.
Comcast SportsNet cameraman Mitch Tischler filmed the emotional on-field exchange between Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins and his dad, who was wearing a No. 8 jersey and a Redskins cap. There are really no streaks, it’s really one-game seasons and so moving forward these next six games, that’s what we have to do. If I presented you with those numbers before telling you anything about the game, you’d assume that it was Brees who finished with that line. By halftime, Cousins was 17 for 20 for 295 and three TDs, as the Redskins rolled to a 394-190 edge in total yards to that point.
The Saints punted on their next two possessions; Washington answered with successful field goals from 35 and 23 yards, the latter as time expired in the first half, to take a 27-14 lead.
With Robert Griffin III seemingly not going anywhere, the Redskins could be forced to franchise tag the quarterback until they can afford a long-term deal. But that all changed on Sunday, and he picked a great game to be at.
“There wasn’t a lot, I’m sure, that we (are) going to look at on that tape that we’re not going to be disappointed in”, Saints coach Sean Payton said.
The Washington Redskins played one of the worst defenses in NFL History Sunday, but their overall team performance should be applauded.
Could the Redskins – that hapless franchise that has made the playoffs just five times in the 23 years since their last Super Bowl victory – actually be a complete team? “Our offensive line was outstanding and obviously Kirk was the trigger-man”. The backs caught 8 passes for 167 yards, making them attributable for 380 of the 514 yards on the day.
