Scottish Saltire hangs among shrine in Paris’ Place de la Republique in
Reports of shooting sent people running on the Place de la Republique, where thousands had gathered today in mourning and solidarity after France’s worst ever attacks.
A few hundred metres away, a few people even jumped into the cold waters of the Ourcq canal to escape the feared threat, a security agent said.
Hundreds of people who had gathered at a restaurant that was the site of one of last Friday’s attacks in Paris, suddenly ran away from the scene this evening in what turned out to be false alarm of a terrorist attack.
It’s possible that suspects directly involved in Friday’s Paris terror attacks remain at large, a French counterterrorism source close to the investigation told CNN on Sunday. A French law enforcement official stated the panic was apparently brought on by fireworks, in accordance to the Related Press. “We ran around again back to the Carillon and that’s when I saw the bodies on the ground”, he said.
A live video feed, posted by Reuters, show people running from the plaza.
People in the La Place de la Republique scattered overnight after hearing a loud bang and fearing there was a gunman in the square.
This time, three teams of attackers were involved and seven suicide bombers blew themselves up – three near the stadium, three at the concert hall and one not far from it, authorities said.
Our euronews correspondent met up with French ambassador Andre Parant to ask him how these attacks would impact France and its Muslim community.
Brady said the wave of worldwide support had been heartening for the local residents, and would spur the city – and country – on through its period of vast grief. Police carefully searched the bags of the many attendees before letting them in. Police say two of his brothers participated in the attacks.
“We are thinking about our friends and we also know people who work as police in the city and we are remembering all that they face too”. And at a public square, through a loudspeaker, the police had been advising people to leave the area – but they’re not leaving.
