Ted Cruz: Obama terror response ‘shameful’
“And I would be open to that if it can do it in a way that allows us to ensure that among them are not infiltrated, people who are part of a terrorist organization”.
However in the wake of the Paris attacks, Mr Bush suggested that any American assistance to refugees fleeing the Middle East should be primarily focused on Christians. Obama didn’t mention Texas Sen. Cruz isn’t proposing that the USA keep out only radicals likely to commit acts of terror.
Asked what would have happened if his own father – a Cuban refugee who fled the island’s repressive Communist regime – had been told all those years ago by political leaders that there was no place for him because of security risks, Cruz said it was a different situation. “We don’t have religious tests (for) our compassion”, Obama forcefully insisted.
“There is no doubt we would need to vet anyone coming in, but there is no indication that we have Muslims pretending to be Christians in the coming refugee wave”, Cruz said before an event at the College of Charleston, concluding his three-day swing across the Palmetto State. The announcements came after authorities revealed that at least one of the suspects believed to be responsible for the attacks in Paris entered Europe through Greece after falsely identifying himself as a Syrian refugee.
“It’s not that we don’t want to, it’s that we can’t”, Rubio said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week”.
A few lawmakers have called for admitting Christian refugees but not Muslim refugees.
Washington state will continue to welcome Syrian refugees.
It didn’t take long for Republican candidates to pin blame on President Barack Obama’s policies for combating the Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday. (Ironically, one of the justifications for turning away ships of fleeing Jews was that they had somehow been “infiltrated” by Nazi spies.) Since then, however, the USA has been the world’s leader in resettling refugees so they can make a new life in another country.
“I just signed an Executive Order instructing state agencies to take all available steps to stop the relocation of Syrian refugees to [Louisiana]”, the Louisiana governor and Republican presidential hopeful Bobby Jindal tweeted.
“It is very important for us right now, particularly those who are in leadership, particularly those who have a platform and can be heard, not to fall into that trap, not to feed that dark impulse inside of us”, Obama said.
Cruz responded on CNN Monday. Those refugees are first screened by officials from the United Nations and organizations such as the Red Cross from among people who have fled to camps in neighboring countries. “Our goal, as we’ve said many times, is to degrade and ultimately destroy this barbaric terrorist organization”.
