Carson Pushes Back on Questions About Biography
“Show me somebody – even from your business, the media – who is 100 percent accurate in everything that they say that happened 40 or 50 years ago”, Carson said on “This Week”.
“But, you know, what does it say about people who immediately jump on the bandwagon if they hear something bad rather than waiting and finding out what the truth is?”
After the Politico story, advertisements emerged showing the United States Military Academy ran advertisements using the word “scholarships”. At the moment, what seems like the most likely version of events is that Carson saw Westmoreland at a February Detroit event and may have been told that he probably could get into West Point (where all cadets receive a full ride in exchange for post-graduation service) given his credentials.
Hours earlier, Carson had told Fox News in an interview, “I guess it could have been more clarified”.
“The burden of proof is not going to be on me to corroborate everything I have ever talked about in my life, because once I start down that road, from now until the election, you’re going to be spending your time doing that and we have much more important things to do”, Carson said. Carson now describes his stabbing victim as a close relative and says he is protecting the person’s identity from the media.
He said he was flattered by the suggestions but had already chose to go to college and medical school.
The Journal reported it could find no record in the Yale student newspaper that his photograph and name were published as the most honest student in the class because he had not pretended he had not seen the notice of the re-test. The words of Carson: I never said I received a full scholarship. Sunday, he went on the attack, blasting the media for covering that story and others.
In an unsigned editorial today the Wall Street Journal correctly observes that Carson’s real problem is not murky remembrances but murky policy positions, and recommends he sharpen his policy points.
In a press conference that occurred Friday night, Carson said that he had never claimed that he obtained a “full scholarship”. “Still waiting on the apology”, he wrote. The class was supposedly told that the results from their last test had mysteriously burned in a fire and they needed to retake it. For his part, former Republican front-runner Donald Trump spoke to CBS’ Face The Nation about the charges. “I hope it works out for Ben”.
On the campaign trail in recent days, Trump has said voters should be troubled by Carson’s account of his “pathological” anger in youth and particularly his account of attempting to hit his mother with a hammer. But I don’t think anything that happened in the past week is going to play a big role in bringing his flight to an end.
“I just don’t know what to think”, Mr. Trump said on “Face the Nation”.
