Canada to pull out of ISIS bombing mission says PM Trudeau
Wall says in a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that he is concerned about fast-tracking refugee claims.
He says Friday’s attacks in Paris are a reminder of what can happen when even a few risky people get into a country.
Trudeau’s Liberals won a majority in Parliament in October, unseating the nine-year-old government of Conservative Stephen Harper, who had emphasized national security and wanted to accept fewer refugees at a slower pace. However, Quebec Immigration Minister Kathleen Weil sought to temper expectations.
“To be frank, I’m not sure it will be possible” to meet the January deadline, she said in Montreal. “I think that people realize it’ll take the time it’ll take, but we are determined to do it well”.
Trudeau, speaking at the end of the G20 summit in Turkey, said his first priority was safety. “I think that’s the real key here: they need to share the plan”.
Police say the woman was kicked and beaten and had her cellphone stolen by two males before she fled to the school, where someone inside called police for her.
He said he was looking forward to his first formal bilateral with Obama because “we’re going to have a lot to agree on” despite the president’s recent rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline project from Alberta to the USA gulf coast. “We can not have our decisions being driven by fear”.
Last week, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told reporters security screenings for Syrian refugees could possibly take place both overseas and in Canada. His health minister, Jane Philpott, said the government is being mindful of health and security concerns while working to address the urgent refugee crisis.
On Monday, federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould argued the government is taking a responsible approach to the matter.
Page 120, section G 26 of the UN’s Handbook for processing Refugees, states that being a part of a terrorist group doesn’t mean you can’t be a refugee.
“We made a clear commitment in the campaign to stop the bombing mission by Canadian jets… and we have the mandate to do that”, he said.
In his letter, Wall wrote that Saskatchewan would support “a redoubling of screening and security efforts erring on the side of caution, deliberativeness and discernment”. For Trudeau, it will be a chance to discuss many topics, like a continental energy strategy and how to ensure the upcoming climate change talks in Paris are successful.
