Damages after tornadoes tear through Texas Panhandle
Dozens of tornadoes were reported and at least one wedge tornado churned through the Texas Panhandle in the dark, narrowly avoiding populated cities and towns.
The storms are on the warm side of a winter storm, which is bringing blizzard conditions to the High Plains.
National Weather Service survey teams will be out assessing the damage on Tuesday.
The worst of the tornadoes and severe weather Tuesday should be in Arkansas, Louisiana, and MS, the prediction center said.
There were 38 preliminary reports of tornadoes on Monday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Kansas logged 22 tornado reports in western sections of the state – many of them touching down after sunset.
Several twisters struck the Pampa area Monday night. Both deputies declined to be taken to a hospital.
Four empty cars on a BNSF Railway freight train derailed near Miami, about 20 miles from Pampa, at about 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Dallas-based Oncor (ON-kor) reports about 32,000 customers without power, mainly in North and East Texas, amid storms and heavy rain.
Several cars surrounded the building.
A second large tornado moved through the Pampa area with damage reported as well. He says the 87-car train was headed from Wellington, Kansas, to Amarillo.
The Halliburton Plant in Pampa deals with oilfield services and products.
The Gray County sheriff’s office said two deputies who were exposed to the chemical, which was unspecified, refused medical treatment.
