Mitt Romney Tells GOP Leaders He ‘Can’t Go Back To That Life’
Mitt Romney has remained adamant in his decision not to make a bid for the presidency, despite supporters calling on him to do otherwise.
The fact that Donald Trump and Ben Carson are still around and are still sucking the oxygen out of the primary race is causing real panic among Republican elites. Maybe a draft movement for Romney could get a few traction. “You have Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, then Iowa and a week later, New Hampshire, and it’s going to be over in the blink of an eye”. I think reporters also understand that it is the Democrats, not the Republicans, who are desperate-so desperate that they are trying to avoid holding debates, for fear that voters will realize what a bad candidate Hillary Clinton is, or notice that Bernie Sanders is an elderly socialist. Scot Walker has already dropped out of the race.
“This business has turned into show business”, said Voinovich, who is backing Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
So Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee is looking good right now. And they’re not going to vote for Mitt. Trump’s counterpunches have been withering, while Carson’s appeal to the base is spiritual, not merely political.
According to other Republicans, a few in the party establishment are so desperate to change the dynamic that they are talking anew about drafting Romney – despite his insistence that he will not run again. DA President Gara LaMarche, for one, admits it might be an issue – but he isn’t too anxious: “We have a wide range of human beings and different temperaments and approaches in the DA, so it’s quite possible that there are people who are a little concerned, as well as people who are curious or are supportive… we’ll take stock of that and see where it might lead”.
But what if Mitt Romney were somehow to become the Republican nominee? He may be able to fare very competitively versus Hilary Clinton. Hilary should be easier to face and easier to attack.
