Raiders’ Aldon Smith suspended one year
Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith has been suspended for a year by the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported in a tweet.
He signed with the Raiders in early September and had continued to steadily improve this season as he worked his way back into playing shape and became more familiar with the Raiders’ scheme. Smith finished with 8 1/2 sacks and 34 tackles in 11 games in 2013.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Smith was a first-round pick, seventh overall, by the 49ers out of Missouri in the 2001 draft.
January 27: Smith is arrested in Miami on DUI charges.
Upon posting $26,000 bail, Smith walked out of jail and disputed the latest drunken-driving allegation, his third. He also missed five games in 2013 after voluntarily entering a rehabilitation facility.
In a separate incident, Smith was arrested on April 13, 2014, at Los Angeles worldwide Airport. No charges were filed.
August 6: Smith is arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, DUI and vandalism. Three hours later, the 49ers announced Smith’s four-year tenure was terminated, bringing a swift end to a training camp run in which he was said to have recaptured his Pro Bowl form after an off-year in 2014. Despite the possibility of a suspension the Raiders signed Smith, beating out several teams who were still willing to sign the linebacker despite Smith’s potential discipline from the league.
It’s unclear for which infraction Smith is being suspended.
