Paris Attacks: Second Fugitive Hunted
A few dozen people have so far been detained by police in Belgium, France and Germany in connection with the attacks.
Now in the crosshairs of French and Belgian authorities over the massacre in Paris, Abbaoud has in the past boasted of a close call he had when he passed through a checkpoint as police studied a photo of him. “There is still an operation continuing right now in Molenbeek”. As they work to confirm whether that’s the case, police are analyzing a video recorded by a witness that may show that suspect inside a auto tied to the attacks, French media reported.
The validity of the threat is not known at this time, but given the events in Paris Saturday, in which 129 people were killed, officials were taking extra precautions by diverting the flights.
As the country observed its second of three days of national mourning, law-enforcement operations continued.
Police found ammonium nitrate – a fertilizer that can be used to make bombs – and ammunition of the type used in Kalashnikov assault rifles in addresses connected to the men. Six attacks on French territory have been foiled or avoided since the spring, Cazeneuve said.
Investigators have also been unable to find Salah Abdeslam, a 26-year-old French citizen suspected of involvement in the Paris attacks who slipped through authorities’ grasp over the weekend. The French newspaper Le Monde reports that Ibrahim Abdeslam, Salah’s older brother, was also one of suicide bombers.
– Kerry said a new coalition that includes Iran and Russian Federation “gives us an opportunity to, perhaps, get a ceasefire in place within the next three, four, five weeks”, ending a civil war that’s been ongoing since 2011. It is possible that they were influenced by a radical preacher.
Three French officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the investigation, confirmed to the AP that an analysis of the series of attacks on Friday indicated that one additional person directly involved in the assault remains unaccounted for. The passport was found at the scene.
– NEW: The ambassador said French authorities believe there’s a second suspect on the loose. It remains unclear if the passport was authentic.
Standing with Hollande at the Elysee Palace, Kerry said the carnage in the French capital on Friday, along with recent attacks in Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey, made it clear that more pressure must be brought to bear on the Islamic extremists.
Molins also identified another assailant, Samy Amimour, who blew himself up at the Bataclan concert hall, where 89 people were killed on Friday.
Police also targeted suspects in Toulouse, Lille, Strasbourg, Jeumont, Marseille, Lyon and several suburbs of Paris, with 1,400 officers involved.
The family of at least one Paris suicide bomber knew their son had traveled to Syria, became radicalized and did nothing to report his activity to authorities. The phone contained a message, sent before the attacks began, to the effect of: OK, we’re ready, the officials said.
The interior minister added that 128 raids on suspected Islamist militants had been carried out overnight on Monday to Tuesday, BBC reported. Ten French fighter jets dropped 16 bombs on the targets, the French defense minister said, in coordination with the United States.
The official cited chatter from IS figures that Abaaoud had recommended a concert as an ideal target for inflicting maximum casualties, as well as electronic communications between Abaaoud and one of the Paris attackers who blew himself up.
“This attack was organized, planned and conceived from Syria”, Valls told RTL radio.
The French minister in charge of transport, Segolene Royal, said she wanted security gates at the access of all local and global trains. Ibrahim was different. We did see that he had been radicalised, at least in part.
