Cannabis May Help Mend Bone Fractures, Study
Not only does marijuana encourage the healing process, it also prevents future injury, researchers found. “After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future”, Gabet explained.
New research uncovered another potential benefit of the marijuana plant. In an earlier study, by the same group, it was exposed that cannabinoid receptors within our bodies stimulated bone formation and inhibited bone loss.
The recent study was conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Tel Aviv, Israel, and suggests that the lab mice that were exposed to cannabis healed faster after suffering bone fractures. Marijuana can be used to treat diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.
Interestingly, a new paper in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research argues that marijuana can also heal fractures.
“The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point”, Dr. Gabet said in a statement.
In other weed news, scientists in Colorado have found marijuana to contain contaminants, increased THC levels and less CBD after analyzing cannabis with sophisticated machinery.
Even when isolated from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component of cannabis-researchers found that CBD markedly enhanced the healing process of the rats mid-femoral fractures just after eight weeks.
As indicated by Gabet, the human body is equipped with a cannabinoid system that is involved with regulating both vital and non-vital systems. Even though a lot of works need to be done until the final therapies will be developed it is certain that the psychoactivity of cannabis can be used for clinical purposes, Dr. Gabet added. Previous research by the team determined that the skeleton is regulated by cannabinoids and outside non-psychogenic compounds can influence it as well. “CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity”.
The authors noted that other studies also showed that CBD is safe andwill continue with clinical trials to affirm efficiency of the agent.
“We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing”, said Dr Gabet. The findings could lead to more research down this path to assess the usefulness of the drug in bone fracture healing.
