Parents of 1-month-old baby with 20 broken ribs arrested
WATERBURY, Conn. – A Connecticut couple has been arrested for assaulting their 1-month-old son.
Police began an investigation after the couple, Nikolas Radaskie and Kali Sastrum, brought the baby to St. Mary’s Hospital on July 2 with a swollen leg, which doctors discovered was due to a fracture of the baby’s femur, as stated by court documents. Sastrum allegedly told police she was “shocked” to find out the baby’s leg was broken and “had no idea” how it might have happened.
Police say doctors found fractures that were old and new, including multiple fractures to the child’s ribs.
Radaskie and Sastrum were arrested and both were charged with risk of injury to a minor.
When asked to provide a statement, police said the couple declined and said they had contacted an attorney who told them not to give a statement or talk to police about the injuries. Medical professionals confirmed to police that the injuries were the result of trauma.
Both parents made bond amounts of $25,000, and have been released from custody.
