Curry scores 46 as Warriors stay unbeaten
The reigning National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player scored 46 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 129-116 win over the Timberwolves at Target Centre on Thursday.
The Warriors went 18 for 38 from 3-point range while Minnesota was just 3 for 9. But the Timberwolves had no chance of defending Curry without Rubio, who is tied for No. 6 in the league with 2.3 steals per game.
Minnesota played without point guard Ricky Rubio, who was out due to an injury (strained left hamstring). Minnesota is a team that likes to run, and the versatile Warriors have no problem getting in a shootout with anyone. Nobody would have scoffed or blamed them for throwing in the towel at that point.
It will happen, but since I guessed they’d lose once in the last back-to-back, because Memphis-to-Minneapolis is NOT an easy travel itinerary, and I was incorrect… “(We) just want to keep it going.
Despite now holding a 4-3 record, the Timberwolves – along with the Lakers – remain the only Western Conference team without a home win this season. Gordon Hayward had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Alec Burks added 24 – the last of those a 3-pointer as time expired – for the Jazz.
The Clippers were without starting guards Chris Paul (groin strain) and J.J. Redick (lower back spasms), then Blake Griffin was ejected after drawing his second technical foul with 2:36 left in the first half. Towns posted his sixth double-double, which only four players in the last 30 seasons have achieved in their first eight career games: Shaquille O’Neal, Dikembe Mutombo, and David Robinson.
With Towns in the fold, it does seem like anything is possible down the line. With their 10th straight win to open the season, the Warriors are off to their best start in franchise history. Curry already has four in 10 games.
Curry said they are trying to take it game by game and not think about repeating as champions.
“You commit so much effort to try and slow Steph Curry down and he still scores (46) points”, Mitchell said. “He makes a few tough shots”.
Walton said he thought the plan was to have Barbosa be ready for Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors.
“To get down a deficit like we did, to roar back and be so close”, Towns said, “that’s something, like I’ve said before, we just continue to fight”.
“Most assistant coaches tend to change a little bit [when they get a head position], and not for the good”, said Andre Iguodala, “He’s done a really good job of not creating an ego from the situation he’s been put in and he stays the same”.
Andrew Wiggins on the early play…
“Yeah, they came out hard”. However, it is evident that the Warriors mean business, and with Draymond Green and Klay Thompson continuing to play crucial roles, along with the likes of Festus Ezeli stepping up and making more of a contribution, this unit has the flawless balance and attitude.
