Delhi to table Jan Lokpal bill
In a move that has revived the hopes of masses who carried out massive campaigns demanding a bill to curb down corruption, the AAP-led Delhi government on Wednesday passed the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Winter Session of State Assembly.
The Jan Lokpal bill, which provides for a strong anti-corruption ombudsman, was one of the main election planks of Arvind Kejriwal’s party.
On the floor of the house the Leader of the Opposition, BJP’s Vijendar Gupta, questioned the Chief Minister, saying “the bill over which the AK-49 government resigned has forgotten the issue, this time despite a thumping majority”. “The historic Jan Lokpal Bill is passed by Delhi cabinet”.
The party has also chose to hold demonstrations throughout the session to put pressure on the government to introduce the Jan Lokpal Bill and present the Finance Commission report in the Assembly. “They have not even made a mention of the bill in the house”.
“Any dilution of the original bill won’t be acceptable to the Congress. The bill that was laid during the first stint of the AAP government should be brought”, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said.
The Winter session of Delhi assembly was initiated on Wednesday and will continue till November 28.
Apart from it, five more Bills were lined up in the Assembly.
According to government sources, instead of the bill, the government will push for amendments to the existing Delhi Lokayukta Act.
