The Houston Rockets Have Fired Head Coach Kevin McHale
Sources are reporting that Kevin McHale has been fired by the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announced the firing.
Before their recent four-game slide, the Rockets, last year’s beaten Western Conference finalists, had become the first National Basketball Association team to lose their first three matches of a season by at least 20 points. McHale was sacked by the Rockets today, per Adrian Wojnarowski.
The 57-year-old former Boston Celtics star was signed to a three-year contract extension in December 2014, and he guided the Rockets to back-to-back 54-plus win seasons, but he was unable to overcome a surprisingly slow start to the current campaign. General managers around the league, including in Houston, believed it was just a matter of time until Bickerstaff was a successful head coach in the league. Wojnarowski also listed Jeff Van Gundy, Tom Thibodeau and Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford as potential options to land the full-time position. McHale had a record of 189-123 in the regular season, and a 13-16 record in the post season.
