Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’ Is About… More Than One Person
For 44 years, Carly Simon fans have argued over the famous lyrics for the hit song “You’re So Vain” and exactly who they were about.
“I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren”, she tells PEOPLE. Still rumored to be in the running: a bunch of other old dudes.
Although she revealed one of song’s inspirations, she isn’t saying who else she penned the song about and she doesn’t plan on giving up the secret. However, there is more to the story which very few people – if anyone – had thought about.
Simon will release the memoir Boys In The Trees on November 24. She even joked and took a little job at Beatty when she spoke about him.
Simon says the caustic song about a self-absorbed lover is actually based on a composite of three of the men in her life around that time, and one of them is actor Warren Beatty.
But Carly told People she was only singing about Warren in the 2nd verse… while verses 1 and 3 are about two other guys!
For more on Simon, head to PEOPLE. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting any answers anytime soon because when asked if she would ever confess she says, “I don’t think so”. But what about the other two verses? She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for “You’re So Vain” in 2004, and awarded the ASCAP Founders Award in 2012.
Beatty, though, has long thought “You’re So Vain” was about him, and said in a 1999 interview, “Let’s be honest, that song is about me”.
So now we know Simon burned Beatty with her popular song.
