Ric Flair Wasn’t Notified Dead Son Would Be Used For Angle
The segment was real and raw and pushed the envelope, and isn’t that what a number of fans have been saying was missing from WWE programming?
Nation podcast, nobody let Ric Flair know that WWE Raw would be using his son Reid – who died of an accidental heroin overdose in 2013 at the young age of 24 – as a plot point in the Divas Championship contract signing that ended the show, and that it made him cry. A few still do not care, but the segment made you curious if nothing more. However, the main focus coming out of it was that WWE went too far. The shocking part was Charlotte and Paige mention several times the passing of Charlotte’s little brother Reid. She got emotional talking about how she’s only here because of him. The wounds are still somewhat fresh, as this didn’t happen a decade ago, but both Charlotte and Ric have healed from it mostly.
Regardless, Ric ultimately understood what WWE was going for with the angle, and supports his daughter no matter what.
He also hinted that Charlotte may have felt pressured to deliver the angle. Because you can’t run a successful company and listen to 40 people complain about their individual likes and dislikes.
The problem with the entire thing is that it was a very personal situation.
Here’s the most heart-breaking one of them all.
However, apparently no one from WWE consulted with Charlotte and Reid’s mother, Elizabeth Fliehr, who was critical of the angle on Twitter (she has since deleted the tweet below). Moreover, while sources indicate that it was Charlotte who gave the “OK” to use Reid’s name, her famous papa believes Charlotte agreed to go along with it because she didn’t want to “rock the boat”, and that she doesn’t “feel comfortable saying no to anybody yet”. I will just say that I know that Hunter, and Stephanie and Michael Hayes have her back. I think if anything that could be considered a negative, I don’t think she feels like she’s comfortable enough to say “no” to anything yet. Even though she’s a champion, doesn’t mean she goes ‘Hey this is what I want to do and what I’m not going to do’. Just because you’re the champ, doesn’t mean you say no. It’s a very sensitive issue, it’s very new.
Flair said that even though he wasn’t approached, he doesn’t think it would have mattered. However, they have been in the company longer and have big stock in WWE.
Next, it’s time for us to see ladies on the current roster get a main event spot on a PPV card – it’s clear they’re ready, and so are we.
