Sharks 3-0 on road trip after topping Bruins
■ Miscellany: This is the third game of a six-game road trip for the Sharks. Melker Karlsson had a goal and an assist, also in the big second period when the Sharks capitalized on a string of Bruin penalties.
The Bruins haven’t done badly either, turning to Jonas Gustavsson as their backup, with Gustavsson putting up a 3-1-0 record, 2.25 goals against, and. Each game hasn’t been flawless, but San Jose has secured all six points which is all you can ask for from a group that appears to be gaining confidence. The Bruins got that back at 9:20 when Seidenberg flipped the puck from the left point and Randall tipped it home for his first point in his last eight games.
Marleau, the franchise’s all-time leader in points and games played yet who has been the subject of rampant trade speculation lately, is sitting on 999 career points in an impressive 18-year career, all spent in San Jose. Marleau is 2 points shy of becoming the first player in Sharks history to reach 1,000.
Marleau is a 36-year-old veteran that has been with only the Sharks since the 1997-98 season. The Sharks return home Sunday after they play in Columbus. A matchup with the San Jose Sharks will make that tougher.
Update: That gorgeous Malkin goal ended up being the game-winner, as the Penguins managed that 4-1 lead into a 4-3 win.
“It was kind of one of those things where we were playing not to lose”, defenseman Torey Krug said. “If we have one then it’s enough to cost us a game and right now we have way too many”.
Joe Thornton said: “He’s skating well, he looks powerful, [and] tonight he scored us another one”. Bergeron, Brad Marchand, Matt Beleskey, David Krejci and Torey Krug chose not to participate.
The Bruins were pressing for the tying goal when Marchand took an ill-advised high-sticking penalty with 2:40 remaining.
Although Zubrus is coming off a contract that saw the 6 foot 5 power winger paid out $3.1 million per season, his sharp decline in production over the last few years (which only got even sharper in his 2014-2015 campaign) suggest that if he does see a contract from the PTO with San Jose, it won’t be much to look at. They won 2-1 at Buffalo on Saturday on Patrick Marleau’s overtime tally.
Joe Pavelski got the scoring started 42 seconds into the game for the Sharks and had two assists. “In this league you’ve got to get wins together in order to create separation with the teams behind you”.
Ryan O’Reilly’s power-play goal with 6:57 to play broke Niemi’s shutout bid. The rookie forward hadn’t scored in seven games, but he now has three goals on seven career shots. By now, the Bruins can and have talked about the necessary adjustments “til they’re blue in the face”. The Sharks poured three goals past Tuukka Rask in a 3:25 span of the second period and then held on for a 5-4 victory at the TD Garden.
“That’s as well as I’ve seen him play”, coach Peter DeBoer said after Jones made 30 saves against the Sabres. I mean in the first period I thought I was okay, but the second period I didn’t play well at all.
