Brooklyn Pols Hail De Blasio Creation of Supportive Housing
A newly formed team of specially trained counterterrorism officers is being deployed in NY City in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press conference on Monday. “We are taking responsibility for everything that can be asked of us”.
The heightened security supplements an already increased police presence at French government locations and popular tourist areas in NY City.
Christie, who has cited concerns about the vetting of Syrian refugees as his principal concern in opposing their acceptance to the USA and has said New Jersey will not accept any Syrian refugees at this time, hit back at de Blasio on Twitter on Tuesday, saying that it’s to be expected from a “liberal politician” like de Blasio.
The housing initiative, known as New York/New York IV, was supposed to be a partnership with the state.
“For New Yorkers suffering with mental illness and other disabilities, on the cusp of facing another brutal winter on our city’s streets, Bill de Blasio has just thrown them a lifeline of hope”, said Mary Brosnahan, President of the Coalition for the Homeless.
But de Blasio continued to criticize the New Jersey governor today for his position, holding up a picture of refugee boy whose body washed up on the beach and saying, “I’d like to know what Gov. Christie wants to do about this”. But the city will now fund the entire expansion. To cover total costs, $1 billion will come from the City, including $380 million budgeted through Housing NY, and the remaining $1.6 billion will come from low-income tax credits and private sources.
The mayor’s announcement was held at the Times Square supportive housing building on 43rd Street, which has many long-term residents.
“I’m truly glad to hear about the mayor’s plans because I see homeless people on the streets-they are getting younger and younger and something needs to be done here”, Mr. Cox said.
