McHale fired by Rockets after 11 games
After only eleven games the Rockets have decided to make a major change on Wednesday morning as they have reportedly fired head coach Kevin McHale, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports. Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski first broke the news on Twitter.
McHale was in his fifth season with Houston and is coming off a 56-26 season where the Rockets fell to eventual champion Golden State in the conference championship. Just a year ago, despite going without the services of Dwight Howard for over half-a-season, Houston still managed to muster a borderline top-five defense.
Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey said it was a tough decision but the team wasn’t responding to McHale.
Management decided a change was necessary after four bad losses in a row, including giving the Brooklyn Nets their first win of the season last week and being routed at home by the Boston Celtics Monday.
However, a change must be made; whether the said change calls for a coaching switch, staggering Lawson’s and Harden’s minutes even more extensively, or making a midseason trade, the team direly needs an injection of energy.
Bickerstaff, son of longtime National Basketball Association coach Bernie Bickerstaff, has been steadily rising in the coachng position. They also had the second best player in the league, if we count MVP votes, in James Harden. “We weren’t able to close it out, and Corey Brewer hits a one-legged runner from the logo, and that’s the way it goes”. “He’s going to get a chance to get a few rest here, probably jump on TV and have a blast doing that, and then there will be a lot of teams wanting to hire him, because he did a fantastic job in Houston”.
McHale was hired by the Rockets before the 2011-12 season.
“I don’t agree with the firing”, Stevens said Wednesday night before hosting the Dallas Mavericks.
“He’s an unbelievable guy and one of my favorite coaches I’ve ever played for, and definitely one that’s positive”, Parsons said.
Through 11 games so far this season, however, saying Houston has disappointed would be an understatement.
The Rockets will miss rookie first-round pick Sam Dekker as he undergoes back surgery this week and will miss at least three months. The Blazers have lost four straight games that are within one-possession in the final three minutes.
