Top 10 phone makers in the world in Q3 2015
However, Canaccard warns it may not have accurate figures, saying it may have overestimated Apple’s profits because of the non-inclusion of rapidly growing Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi and Huawei into the study.
Continued demand for affordable smart phones in emerging markets drove worldwide sales of smartphones in the third quarter of 2015, according to Gartner. In terms of total sales volumes, Apple has about 14.5 percent of marketshare and continues to have a 94 percent share of the total profits of the Smartphone industry.
Samsung continued to hold top spot for both smartphones and mobiles, with Apple taking second in both categories.
Looking at the details, Samsung was still the leading brand for smartphone sales worldwide between July and September, with 83.5 million sold (giving it a market share of 23.7 per cent) compared with 46 million for Apple (13.1 per cent).
Apple continued to do well in the premium segment of the smartphone market with its iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models for most of the same quarter.
Almost 98 per cent of these smartphones sold had either the Android or iOS operating system installed.
However, Huawei’s sales continue to grow rapidly driven by the popularity of its handsets in its home market of China, and its continued expansion around the world – particularly in Europe. “Microsoft smartphones will mainly focus on driving value for enterprise users”.
Gartner’s resaerch found this also positioned Samsung ahead of the pack in worldwide mobile phone sales to end users in the third quarter of 2015.
“The availability of affordable smartphones in emerging markets saw consumers upgrade their “feature phones” to smartphones more quickly because of the small price gap”, said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner in an official media release issued globally this morning. Microsoft even with the launch of Windows 10 for desktop (and soon on smartphones) did not move up but dropped down from 3 percent to 1.7 compared to previous year. “Smart phone sales in emerging markets rose to 259.7 million in the third quarter of 2015 – an 18.4 percent growth over the third quarter of 2014 – while sales in mature markets saw growth of just 8.2 percent over the same period”.
