State’s Attorney Freezes Melodie Gliniewicz’s Bank Accounts
But Melodie Gliniewicz’s defense attorneys claim the affidavit names the wrong bank account, and transactions do not show probable cause that she was involved in any money laundering.
Melodie Gliniewicz, the widow of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, is asking that everyone refrain from rushing to judgment about her family, saying through her attorney the truth would come out in time.
“This matter is pending a criminal investigation”, State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim told the Chicago Tribune.
He says the 31-year-old from Vernon Hills didn’t urge police to escalate the search for three men initially sought in Gliniewicz’s death. Two months later, investigators announced Gliniewicz, 52, had staged his suicide to look like a homicide amid fears village officials would discover he had been stealing from the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post 300 for seven years.
Melodie Gliniewicz’s attorneys have filed a motion to stop the bank account freeze.
The court documents state that Gliniewicz took thousands of dollars from the Explorer program to pay for personal items such as hormonal supplements and adult websites. They say deposits into the Explorer account included money from Joe Gliniewicz’s paychecks and a loan from his retirement account totaling $58,800. Authorities also have said he spent almost $5,700 on a trip to Hawaii and a more than $15,000 on a student loan.
