LPGA: Coming Up, Ko v Park
“But any award or just to know that, hey, I’ve won five times on Tour and I’ve had so many top 10s, I think it’s great”.
Charley Hull has played only 13 events on the LPGA Tour this term with three top 10s, and she will probably play more regularly next season. There’s been 28 different winners on tour since, 18 so far this season, but Lewis isn’t among them. But it’s not something the 20-year has on the front of her mind. Getting into the Hall of Fame has been her career goal.
Ko and Park are differentiated by contrasting golf swings but united by stunning short games. Thompson admitted a selfish attitude on focusing on her own game and not worrying about what others are doing will keep her moving up in the rankings.
“I think winning and playing well at an event is the top priority”, Ko said.
Alison Lee, a 20-year-old from California, and Minjee Lee, 19, an Australian who developed her game through her country’s vaunted national development program, fit the more traditional rookie mold.
Sei Young Kim had a rough opening round to the year in the first tournament of 2015, a 79 at the Coates Golf Championship, but the following week she won in the Bahamas.
All they’re playing for this week at the LPGA Tour Championship is the No. 1 spot in the world rankings, the season’s money crown, the yearlong scoring title and the tour’s player of the year award. But she’s kept her card, kept winning enough money, and steadily improved the past couple of years especially.
While Park is in form, coming off victory at last week’s tournament in Mexico, Ko was irresistible before taking her rest this month, recording three wins and finishing no worse than eighth in her previous six tournaments. She closed the gap in Player of the Year to just 3 points, trails in Official Money by just $188,321 and took the lead in the Vare Trophy race with only a. 016 stroke/round average separating the two.
“The last few years have been a huge disappointment”, Tamulis said. “So I’ve tried to make myself accessible [this week]. It’s been a really fun season, had a lot of great things happening and things that really surprised me along the way, too”. “And then if you get the extra bonus with it, it’s even better”.
Tamulis was born in Lapeer, Michigan, but her parents bought a house in Naples in 1987 when she was in second grade and she spent her childhood between Naples and Michigan.
Tamulis says she doesn’t have expectations headed into this weekend’s tournament.
“This year, being here and qualifying has been fantastic”, Tamulis said. This doesn’t get any better. It was a great year in all but one category: Wins. But now this whole week of an experience instead of just an experience after the tournament.
Compare her numbers from the last two years side by side, and it’s tough to find an easy explanation why that win hasn’t arrived. Hyo Joo Kim also had a major title, the 2014 Evian Championship, when she shot a first-round 61, the lowest score in major history. Paired with Ko and Park in the opening round, Lewis will get another good look at where she wants to be again. “At the same time, I’m very thankful for everybody who is taking time out of their days and week and their golf and tennis to help us out here”. Eventually they found a ball she liked and could control, and going back to the Solheim Cup in September the confidence has been back to past levels since.
