TWENTYMAN: Lions bring back CB Bill Bentley
He was limited to just 18 games – mostly in the nickel – in three seasons in Detroit from 2012-2014 because of various ailments, including a shoulder injury that wiped out the last 12 games of his rookie season.
Wilson suffered what was described as a “pretty significant” right knee injury in Sunday’s win at Green Bay, which was their first there since 1991.
Detroit fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive line coaches Jeremiah Washburn and Terry Heffernan last month.
The Lions cut Bentley in June after drafting him in the third round in 2012.
Yesterday, Lions cornerback Nevin Lawson and safety Don Carey missed practice because of injuries as did defensive tackle Gabe Wright and receiver Calvin Johnson.
“In the situation that we’re in, we needed a guy to come in that understands the system, that’s capable of playing for us and playing well, which he’s demonstrated”, coach Jim Caldwell said. “We are at a little different stage”.
Detroit’s interim general manager, Sheldon White, made the moves for a team that has a win-now mantra from team owner Martha Firestone Ford.
And, the owner is watching closely to perhaps help her decide who stays and who goes during the offseason.
