Official says 160 Russian IS fighters killed in Syria
The Islamic State group said that a bomb had been smuggled onto the Russian airplane at Sharm al-Sheikh airport to punish Russia for its air strikes against IS targets in Syria.
When it became impossible to deny that terrible truth, Russian warplanes joined French jets in the skies over Raqqa, with President Vladimir Putin swearing bloody revenge for the carnage in Egypt. As the WSJ notes, the Russians gave Washington advance notice of their bomber and cruise missile attacks against ISIS on Tuesday, the first time they have extended such a courtesy since their campaign in Syria began.
President Barack Obama says Russian Federation and Iran must decide whether they want to prop up Syrian President Bashar Assad or “save the Syrian state” by finding a Syrian government that can be legitimate.
But he called Russian Federation a constructive partner in the UN-backed efforts to end the Syrian conflict, despite its opposing views on the fate of Mr Assad.
A day after Russian Federation officially confirmed that the civilian airplane that crashed in the Sinai Peninsula at the end of October was downed by a bomb aboard, Russia’s army in Syria stepped up its actions against Islamic State. This has not only to do with the war crimes that Assad committed during the four-year-old civil war in Syria, but also with the fact that Assad has colluded with Islamic State to ensure the group’s survival. Saudi Arabia has supported the armed opposition to Assad, who is supported by Iran and Russian Federation, and is opposed to him being part of any future in Syria. So do the Iranians for other reasons, and thanks to the United States deal with Tehran on nuclear technology, they have the cash and the influence to keep Assad in place as a bulwark against the Sunni extremists, which includes ISIS but also Jabhat al-Nusra and other smaller groups.
The document does not say whether Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should remain in power during that time.
But Assad said there could be no transition schedule for elections while parts of the country were still rebel-controlled.
President Obama is, frankly, delusional if he thinks he can get out in front of this realignment and control it with smarmy declarations that the Russians are finally doing what he wants them to do.
As France called for cooperation in fighting the Islamic State, the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry announced it is sending a warship to support French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which is being deployed to carry out strikes against Islamic State in Syria.
The attack on Paris and the subsequent pressure from peoples across the world seems to be calling for a change in strategy. He’s held back from asking Parliament to vote on the issue for lack of cross-party support.
New talks are scheduled for December, and the USA and Russian Federation said they would push for a formal cease-fire between Mr. Assad’s forces and his political opponents-but not Islamic State.
“We still have not managed to go beyond the joint approval of the Memorandum of Understanding on Prevention of Flight Safety Incidents in the Course of Operations in Syria, and even then with a reservation by the USA that by no means such interaction should be regarded as the normalization of military contacts, which were frozen on the United States initiative”.
Wednesday’s statement by Col.-Gen.
While France and Russian Federation tout their aggressive air campaign, the US has carried out 95 percent of the airstrikes in Syria since the coalition air campaign against Islamic State militants began in August 2014.
