FanDuel stops taking NY bets
DraftKings said it would continue to allow New Yorkers to play unless a NY court decides otherwise.
The move ultimately comes after the New York-based company failed to convince a judge Monday that its services should not be mentioned in the same breath as Vegas bookies. DFS is nothing more than a rebranding of sports betting. It is plainly illegal.
Boies also argues that Schneiderman improperly singled out DraftKings and FanDuel for his action. But this argument fails for two clear reasons.
And most importantly, if someone like the notorious Scott H.
Considering DraftKings spent the most on advertising of any company in this country in September, and that the money it spent in ads from November 2-8 (about $1.8 million) is half of what the site spent weekly in September and October (between $4-6 million), that request from DraftKings doesn’t seem like a good sign for the websites or for their network partners.
For example, Schneiderman pointed to a DraftKings presentation to prospective investors that make comparisons to poker and sports wagering. “But if we’re going to de facto legalize sports gambling across the United States, we should at least do it on goal and not because two companies have somehow weaseled out a way to pretend they are not something that they clearly are”.
The court filing notes that DraftKings insists it is not in the gambling business but the papers point out that it embeds keywords that led users of Internet search engines typing in the word “betting” to its website.
– Despite the sites’ rejection of the label “gambling”, the sites employ an “overt strategy of recruiting gamblers”.
FanDuel is the industry leader in one day fantasy sports.
That might seem extremely unfair, especially as the other 99 percent consistently pour money and false hopes into their accounts week after week. This increases the likelihood that search engines, like Google, will send users looking for gambling straight to the DraftKings site.
Fantasy sports – where participants select real-life players to create a “fantasy team” whose performance is pitted against others – have become wildly popular in the United States in sports such as basketball, hockey and American football. With poker and DFS, professional players, known as “sharks”, profit at the expense of casual players, known as “minnows”. They also have recently prohibited employees from playing on rival sites. The company was issued a subpoena for continuing to allow New Yorkers access to these fantasy-sports sites.
